The Turkish Voluntary Organizations Foundation issued the following press release on 27.07.2021, following the dissolution of the government in Tunisia, the closure of the parliament and a coup attempt on 26.07.2021.
The decision of the President of Tunisia to dissolve the government and close the parliament by unlawfully using his constitutional authority is an attempt to seize power. We strongly condemn this coup attempt against the government elected by the Tunisian people.
The efforts of Tunisian Parliament Speaker Ghannouchi to protect the will of his people and ensure the functioning of the parliament are very valuable and should be supported.
The Tunisian President is dragging his country into political and economic instability with his unlawful decision. Tunisia has been faced with a coup attempt similar to the “February 28” that took place in Türkiye.
The Tunisian Army's decision to chain and close the parliament's door and prevent members of parliament from entering the parliament is a constitutional crime.
The attempts of some media organizations in the world and in Türkiye to legitimize the coup attempt in Tunisia with the perception of it being a “Coup against the Islamist Government” is vandalism and coup-mongering.
A coup that would disrupt democratization in Tunisia, as was done in Egypt, is completely unacceptable. A coup means discrediting, impoverishment, internal conflict and weakness. The Islamic world has suffered greatly from coups and dictators.
We believe that the Tunisian people will defend their national will against the coup attempt disguised as law. We appreciate our country's statements in favor of the elected government of Tunisia.
As the Turkish Voluntary Organizations Foundation, we invite all our members and civil organizations to react to the attempted coup in Tunisia. We respectfully state to the public that we stand with the freedoms and national will of the sister country Tunisian people.
